*** Rehearsals: Tuesday *** Rehearsal neighborhood: White Plains, NY
The award-winning Westchester Choral Society invites singers to join the chorus for its next concert, a Sunday, May 2, 2009, joint concert with the Fairfield County Chorale (Johannes Somary, Music Director) of Mozart's Grand Mass in C Minor and Mendelssohn's Psalm 42 at 8:00 PM in the Norwalk Concert Hall, accompanied by the Amor Artis Orchestra. The Choral Society's music director, Frank Nemhauser, will conduct auditions for prospective members on January 13 and 20, 2009, at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, 216 Central Avenue in White Plains (near the County Center), where the chorus is in residence. Experienced choral singers in all voice sections (especially men) are encouraged to schedule an appointment. Further audition dates will be added as needed, and the chorus is offering interested singers a free "trial membership" -- the opportunity to attend one or more chorus rehearsals before auditioning. Rehearsals are held at the Conservatory Tuesday evenings 7:00-9:30 PM beginning January 6. Free parking is available, and the Conservatory is fully accessible. For further information and to schedule a singer-friendly audition or a free trial membership, contact WCS President Numa Rousseve at (914) 285-9026 or WCSPresiden@gmail.com, or go to www.westchesterchoralsociety.org.

Nemhauser is Music Director of the Berkshire Choral Festival and Associate Dean at Mannes College of Music. Regarding the audition process, Nemhauser says, "I am looking for quality of voice and the ability to read music/learn music. I would like to stress that the audition procedure will be short and I am extremely kind during auditions."

A February 11, 2008, article in US News & World Report describes choral singing as not only fun and mentally stimulating but also protective of cognitive function through providing social ties. "Choral singing is fun, mentally stimulating, and a real stress-buster," says WCS Vice President Coni Guhl, an administrator at The Performing Arts Center of Purchase College. "It involves watching, listening, reading, counting, and deep breathing. It's great to join such a diverse cross-section of the community in a wonderfully harmonious, aerobic activity!" Founded by Sarah Stewart Bowne in 1942 to perform Bach's B Minor Mass with 15 singers, WCS is over 65 years old but has no intention of retiring. Today its 50 singers perform works from Baroque to contemporary for audiences in Westchester and nearby communities.
Music Divine (updated 12/31/2008) VAN Choir Directory listing
*** Rehearsals: Monday *** Rehearsal neighborhood: Upper West Side
Music Divine has room for a soprano, a countertenor or alto, a tenor and a bass. Auditions are integrated into our rehearsals, which take place most Monday evenings on the Upper West Side, occasionally replaced by a Sunday rehearsal at St. Joseph's Church in Greenwich Village. Our members sing choral music without any audible vibrato, they blend smoothly with each other, and they are excellent sight-readers.

Steve Bonime, the director of Music Divine, has conducted The Renaissance Choir of Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges, which he co-founded with Alex Blachly (Pomerium’s director) in 1963, The Vassar Madrigal Singers, The Renaissance Chorus of New York, The Canby Singers, Polyhymnia, and the New York Madrigal Singers. In all of them, and in many other choruses, he has also sung tenor and countertenor.
Our first concert, in November 2005, paired masses by Josquin and Isaac based on the chanson Une mousse de Biscaye. In April 2006 we performed Lamentations by Lassus; the St. John Passion by his best student, Leonhard Lechner; Holy Week motets by Victoria; and Lotti's 8-voice Crucifixus. In October we presented some of Heinrich Isaac's greatest work. That December we performed Christmas music centered around Josquin's motet Praeter rerum seriem, and works inspired by it: Rore's 7-voice mass, and a Magnificat by Lassus.

We have presented "War and Peace," on the Upper West Side, in Greenwich Village, and at the last Boston Early Music Festival. It features Janequin's La Guerre and a chanson celebrating peace; works by Josquin, La Rue and Ramsey based on the biblical quote "How are the mighty fallen"; several Renaissance settings of Da Pacem, plus one by Arvo Pärt; settings of the liturgy for the Votive Mass for Peace by Isaac and Palestrina, and Bach's "Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg" from Cantata #4.

For the 2007 NY Early Music Celebration, we presented the best of Josquin and Isaac. In March 2008 we performed Salve Regina settings by Obrecht, Martini, Morales, and Victoria, interspersed with motets by Ockeghem. Our last concert offered Obrecht's monumental Missa Salve diva parens. Our next one, featuring Renaissance music for Lent and Easter by the 5 B's (Binchois, Busnois, Barbireau, Brumel and Byrd), will likely be the last weekend in March 2009.

To arrange an audition, please call Steve Bonime at 201-914-3381; or email him at steverica@juno.com (Subject: audition)."

Polyhymnia (updated 11/19/2008) VAN Choir Directory listing
*** Rehearsals: Wednesday *** Rehearsal neighborhood: Upper West Side
Polyhymnia is a small 8-12 voice ensemble specializing in sacred repertoire from the late Middle-ages to the early Baroque, performing both a cappella and with area period instrumental ensembles. One of New York's most exciting early music vocal ensembles, the ensemble holds auditions for all vocal parts throughout the year. Though, at the moment we have no openings, singers are encouraged to audition or communicate their interest, as substitute positions occasionally emerge.

Our 14th season is underway continuing with music including the Morales Requiem, and concluding with a concert of Music by Isaac and Senfl, which will also be performed (funding permitting) in Boston as a fringe event of the Boston Early Music Festival.

The singers of Polyhymnia are advanced amateur and professional singers, and honoraria are occasionally paid. All singers must have strong sight-reading skills, and have a working knowledge of early music vocal technique; voices with vibrato well under control combined with the ability and desire to blend with other singers. Singers must also have the ability to sing one on a part if needed, but should primarily enjoy the experience of sharing a part with one other singer. Experience in a small ensemble is a must.

On September 8, 2003, Polyhymnia was named ensemble-in-residence at the Church of Saint Ignatius of Antioch (Episcopal) where we rehearse and usually perform our three New York concerts. We will occasionally perform in other venues during the season, some of which may require weekend travel; past gigs have included the Boston Early Music Festival and Music at Park Place in Providence, RI. For more info about the audition, contact director John Bradley at 917-838-4636 or e-mail info@polyhymnia-nyc.org; please indicate audition in the subject line.
Oratorio Society of Queens (updated 11/15/2008) VAN Choir Directory listing
*** Rehearsals: Monday *** Rehearsal neighborhood: Flushing
The Oratorio Society of Queens (OSQ) welcomes adults and young people of all faiths, ages and ethnic origins. We are the oldest performing arts organization in Queens with over 100 members that share the exhilaration of preparing and performing great choral masterpieces and promoting musical excellence in Queens. Student internships are offered to Queens high school students.

Our Artistic Director and Conductor, Maestro David Close, is a major reason for our devotion to OSQ. David is a joy to work with. He's an all-around splendid musician - conductor, concert pianist, organist, music director, former opera coach, teacher and a fine tenor in his own right. He has worked very hard - and succeeded, we feel, in developing us into semi-professional performers. We give two big performances annually to sold-out audiences: a Holiday Concert in December and a Spring Gala in May featuring the great chorus/oratorio masterpieces and opera arias and choruses. All voice parts are welcome. Previous choral experience is not necessary, but helpful. There are no auditions, but there are listenings. Listenings are at the break on rehearsal nights. Relax! We understand that you might be nervous. The listening consists of matching a few pitches and singing a simple tune such as My Country 'Tis of Thee.

OSQ rehearses every Monday night from 7:45 to 10:00 PM from September through the end of May at the North Presbyterian Church in Flushing. Rehearsal dates, concert dates and lots more information about OSQ are available at www.queensoratorio.org. More questions? Please call 718-460-0726 or send us an e-mail: info@queensoratorio.org.

Schola Cantorum on Hudson (updated 9/18/2008) VAN Choir Directory listing
Silver Sustaining Member
*** Rehearsals: Monday *** Rehearsal neighborhood: Jersey City, NJ
Schola Cantorum on Hudson, the acclaimed 40-person NY/NJ metropolitan area vocal ensemble, will be auditioning for a limited number of remaining low bass and high soprano positions for our exciting 2008-2009 season. We also welcome inquiries from well-qualified singers of other voice types. Auditions will be held by appointment.

Founded in 1995 by artistic director Dr. Deborah Simpkin King, Schola Cantorum on Hudson has been hailed by critics for its innovative programming and "the most uniquely rounded bel canto singing ever heard in live choral singing." Schola happily resides at the forefront of contemporary choral music by commissioning and premiering new works: after performing the world premiere of composer Randall Svane's Mass two years ago, Schola has been invited to give the Mass its European premiere this summer at the Dom Cathedral in Salzburg, Austria during the heart of the renowned Salzburg Festival.

Schola Cantorum on Hudson is unique for its approach to the ensemble art, which supports healthy development and use of the solo voice in its singing members. SCH is committed to filling solo concert needs from within Schola's talented pool of trained soloists. Between the major ensemble SCH, the chamber ensemble Schola Repertory Singers, and our season-long vocal recital series Schola Sings Solo, opportunities for artist exposure and development abound.

Weekly Monday night rehearsals in Jersey City are easily accessible from Manhattan either via PATH train or by car, and from NJ locations. Parking is plentiful. Our singers represent a mix of active professional musicians, emerging conservatory graduates, and well-qualified amateurs from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Singing membership is attained through a successful audition. You can read more about our audition requirements by visiting us on the web at ScholaOnHudson.org. Contact our Auditions Coordinator by e-mail at auditions@scholaonhudson.org or by telephone at 917-779-9226 to arrange an audition or request more information.

Ten and Change, one of NYC's most established all-male a cappella groups, is holding a post-summer audition for basses. Auditions will be next Tuesday, September 9, from 8-10 PM in midtown NYC.
,br> Ten and Change was established in 2000, has 14-16 current members and over 25 alum, and sings contemporary college fare (Soul to Squeeze, In the End, Ants Marching, Signed Sealed Delivered, etc.). Current members range in occupation (lawyers, waiters, music industry guys, finance, whatever) and age (23-43, most in 20s/early 30s) and live all over the city, but all enjoy the mix of people and close-harmony singing. More info about the group is at our website: www.tenandchange.com. Interested? All that's needed is prior singing experience (all members sang in college), commitment to the weekly rehearsal slot, and an instinct for fun.
